Handmade Paper
Woodworth was in search of a medium able to express the heaviness and monumentality of the walls and towers that had inspired her long ago in her 1979 trip to Italy. She remembered doing small pieces with torn paper during the month she lived in Siena. Her search led her to handmade paper. The maneuverability and the surfaces met her needs.
Woodworth setup a paper-making studio in her studio where she was able to pour large pieces into molds and manipulate the pulp into forms. The use of prepared pulp along with natural organic plants from the fields near her expanded this medium into making sheets that she could paint and print on. Each piece of artwork used different techniques of making and assembling the paper, dyes, and pigments.
The final pieces are a result of experimentation and manipulation of the materials to express the idea which Woodworth continues to explore through her most current work.
